Status: Competition proposal
A large portion of the competition site remains unbuilt to make room for a public park. Existing green areas are preserved and strengthened. The park becomes a blue-green structure in the middle of the city that, beyond recreation, creates resilience against extreme weather events such as flooding and heatwaves.
The extension is designed with great respect for its surroundings. Especially in terms of scale, materiality, rhythm, proportions, urban fabric and public life.
Beautifully patinated, handmade clay brick is reused in the new facades to minimize carbon footprint and continue Svedala’s characteristic brick tradition. By preserving the entire existing municipal building and using wood as the primary building material for structure and finishes, carbon footprint is further reduced.
The public foyer with entrances in all directions connects the building with the city and the existing with the extension. A large skylight fills the space with daylight that filters through the foliage of a huge interior tree.
Since the ground floor is made public, it serves as an interior extension of the public square. A common living room that encourages social interactions. The assembly hall can be used for everything from municipal activities to lectures, concerts, banquets, weddings or just a public living room and space for informal meetings. The space has been carefully designed to emphasize the importance of its democratic function.
